New old guy with old bike

Hi guys

I am new to the forum. I'm from Windsor, ON and I'm interested in bikes so I wanted a project bike to work on and learn bike mechanics so I picked up my first old CCM.

Its a 1948 Men's Standard Roadster CCM.

It's rideable but needs work.

I have to begin by removing some hub rust and rebuilding the hubs.

The bike has been powder coated.

i will have many questions.

Hello,

Welcome to Vintage CCM! I hope that you enjoy restoring your 1948 CCM Roadster. I am sure that there will be plenty of help available from members. Stripping the hubs down should be fairly straightforward. You may want to make a note of how the rear hub comes apart and also how it operates. There may be one or two parts in the hub that need to be replaced, especially if the brake does not work very well. Are the rims in good shape and are the wheels relatively true? If not, you may want to spend some time truing them (hopefully the spoke nipples are free to turn). All bearings should be cleaned, greased, and adjusted. Good Luck!

Hi Old Guy,

Please post some pics to the thread so we can see your bike. Then the "after" pics will look extra good!

Hopefully this pic will upload.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. This will be my first attempt at bike repair. I have done much maintanience on my bikes but never rebuilds. My first priority will be work with what I have and ensure myself the bike is safe to ride.

The frame and rims has been powder coated. I do not know when but it seems like it was quite some time ago. Much rust on hubs including oil port but I think they can be cleaned up and hopefully I'll be able to rebuild the back hub.

The seat is not orginal but this is no surprise. The pedals look orginal judging from the amount of wear on the pedal rubbers. They will need replacing. I have the fenders but they will need a lot of work. And of course the headbadge is broken on the top C and needs replacing if I'm ever able to find a replacement.

And bearings need to be replaced of course.

The rear hub is a Perry 36-14. It needs rebuilding. Not much stopping power. Any information on rebuilding this hub would be appreciated.

I'm not very familiar with Perry hubs and while I don't have any late 1940s CCM catalogues, a Perry hub is shown in the 1950 CCM catalogue. My understanding is that  the 36-14 represents the hole count and spoke gauge. Here's a schematic for the Perry Two Star hub, which appears to be what CCM was offering in 1950. I grabbed the image from another source, as it better illustrates the assembly than the image in the CCM catalogue but a check against the CCM catalogue shows all the same part numbers. Hopefully, it helps.
