SCP red 3-speed

Hi folks, this has been my city beater bike for many years. Rode it to work so alot of miles on it. Acquired it used from a friend many years ago.  The badge with the beaver on it is SCP which I found out from this site was a TO company: Standard Cycle Products.  Which was bought out by CCM in '61.   The Sturmey Archer hub on the bike says '67.    So I assume this bike was made by CCM under the SCP brand.  Obviously a few new parts over the years.  I changed up the rear wheel and tire to get a better ride but kept the hub.

Any insights on this bike are appreciated. It looks like hell but gets some TLC every winter.  I will see if I can find a serial no.

The company dates back to 1933-1934 and was actually bought by CCM circa 1946-1947. CCM operated SCP as a subsidiary until the very early1960s, when they closed the SCP factory and transferred operations to the CCM factory. CCM continued to manufacture SCP branded bicycles into 1973, discontinuing them for the 1974 model model year. SCP bicycles werer typically budget versions of CCM models, using the same frame and many common components.

Given the 1967 hub code, the bicycle is likely a 1967 or 1968 model. I'd be leaning towards the latter based on the fork design. The serial number, which should be located on the rear dropoput, will allow us to confirm the calendar year of manufacture. The combination of sports style frame, 3 speed hub and chrome fenders are similar to the CCM Imperial Sports models. Outside of the hi-riser models, CCM rarely applied specific model names to their SCP bicycles. This model used the generic Men's 3 Speed Sports name.

Thanks very much T-Mar for the intel!  I checked the frame and the serial number is: K800623   It is original paint with no model name or decal on the bike, so the Men's 3 Speed Sports name is appropriate. The 3-speed equipment is original I believe including the hub -- I had a new back wheel built onto the old hub as the original wheel was in bad shape.  Interesting about the paralells with the Imperial. Thanks again.

Ian,

Thank-you for the serial numer. It indicates that your frame was built in 1967. However, it could still be a 1968 model, if it was built late in the calendar year.

Thanks again T-Mar, great to get a confirmed date on the bike -- built during Canada's centennial!  Also thanks for the details about SCP -- at one time they were building bikes very close to where I live in central/east end TO -- it sounds like my bike was built at the CCM west end plant. The bike is in solid shape and will ride again in spring. Cheers,   Ian K.
