Screeching 37 CCM hub

So I just did a re and re on the CCM 37 hub on the Flyte. Completely cleaned, wire wheeled all gunk and greased all parts. I even bought a cylinder oner and honed the heck out of them. Just like my other 37 hub it started to screech after several long rides.

i love riding this bike so much that I am considering lacing a set of Endricks with maybe a Bendix or New Departure single speed hub (to stay period correct). I would keep the Dunlop rims and original hubs if I ever want to show or sell it. Plus the Endrick rims allow only a VERY  limited set of options for tires. Endrick rims fit 770C tires and allow me to put on tires that make the ride a lot softer (and I hope, easier on the fork) and make the ride much smoother.

To recap I have done the followwing to the hub to get it to not squeal.

  • cleaned all parts in a degreaser
  • use a wire wheel to remove oll cake, baked on gunk.
  • Fine grit sandpaper to brake shoes
  • cylinder honer on hub shell
  • greased with high temp grease
  • drops of oil on brake surfaces.

Does anyone have any other suggestions as to how to get the hub to stop squealing?

Thanks in advance to all.

Wayne

break squeal              if one of the bearings are in backwards the squeal will show up after a few rides but not right away

this is definitely a squeal due to the brake shoe rubbing on the hub shell. It's friction thing I'm sure.

Wayne,

I went through the same thing with a 37 hub.  After cleaning, I ended up using grease throughout the hub, and honing it with a small hone for brake cylinders.  It still had a bit of a squeal as you would come to a stop.  What cured it for me was numerous "high" speed stops from around 30KPH down to a slow crawl in a row.  I probably did it about a dozen times up and down the street.  I'm thinking the bit of heat, combined with all the parts getting comfortable with each other again stopped the noise.

ah ha! I will try that!

Thanks!

is your squeal only on brake use  you could try to take a triangle file and square off the grooves on the brake sleeve after this im out of ideas     never had this problem and i have done at least a hundred good luck  william rudolph

It's only when I brake and just the last bit as the bike slows. I will try completely redoing it and using only grease.

I ride in Vancouver and sometimes have longer periods of medium brake application on long hills. It must heat up pretty good. Maybe that bakes on oil or grease and leads to a squeal?

Mybe I'll try to get a video of it to show you exactly.
