Water slide decals

From Wayne Gillies:

Below is a display of some CCM water slide decals I will be offering in the near future and which I now want to post on the Vintage CCM site for "heads up" purposes and to see what kind of interest is generated.  This project has taken a couple of years to get to this point; research is a slow process.

I have been working with an illustrator in Florida who is the consummate professional, Gus Salmon.  None of this would have been possible without assistance from John McKenty, Ken Martin, Jamie McGregor, Ron Miller, Tony, Bill Rudolph, Don Farmer and a host of others who provided me with info and advice (none ignored).

From the top there are 2 Flyer down tube decals; one plain which looks great on dark color bikes, and the one with the shadow which looks good on lighter colour bikes.  Although either can be used as the purchaser wishes.  These decals are accurate and were both used by CCM at different times

Next is the CCM Flyte down tube decal, accurate in size and design.

The Road Racer decal on the left is a figment of my imagination.  Road Racers never had a down tube decal, whereas The Flyer and the 50s Club Racer did, so, I will be putting this decal on the Road Racer that I am restoring and others may do should they wish.

The spears in the centre were standard on the top tube and down tube of the Road Racer and are accurate in size and colours.

The absolute gem of this group is the down tube roundel decal (top right)  The decal is as accurate as is possible, without loosing perspective and harmony; it is approx 1"X 1 1/8".  This decal was in use from the late teens to the early 40s and is suitable on any bike from that period, including the Flyers, Flytes and Road Racers

The final down tube decal is the rather plain, but magnificent early down tube decal, slightly taller than the roundel; it would have been used from the beginning (1899) to about 1920

There are other water slide decals in the works.

These items are real works of art, that can be placed on bikes, display placards,  wherever your imagination takes you, etc

REMEMBER, they are accurate as possible WATER SLIDE decals which will come with instruction sheets.

It would have been so much easier and cheaper to do up these decals in 2 mil or a lesser thickness vinyl sticker material, but, historical accuracy is then lost

I am also including a few pics of the decals mounted on a couple of NOS frames I have, the maroon is a 1938 and the sapphire blue is a 1949.  You may see specks of lint, chips in the paint, that appear to be on the script decals, not so, the decals apply easily, adhere well, set in a short time and leave no air bubbles if gently massaged into place.  I will provide directions

As soon as I have the rest of the decals in hand and figure out pricing (which I will keep as low as possible) I will put them out for sale.

I'll close for now, lest my keyboard run out of letters.  If interested, contact me at bmwchev@msn.com

OOPs!! I forgot to credit Warren Young, media guru, bicycle collector extrodinaire, without whose assistance this project would never have gotten off the ground; and to all the others I have not named, I am grateful for your input.

That is very Kool my friend.   Which decals come from what era.I would like to get the shield decal from the 50s should you ever make those.

I will be buying that sheet when you are ready.

Wayne    Your hard work has done wonders.   They are great,  the colours look perfect.  Looking forward to seeing the Decals.      Ron

Wayne, thanks for the kind words. It is you that made the reproduction of those decals possible, providing the many pictures and continuous research. Looking forward to keep working together.

What other cute projects would you be up to next time. : )

Gus Salmon,

Winter Springs, Florida.

OK I would like to lift the waterslide decales that were used by the city of Vancouver on bikes in the 50s and transfer them to another frame. Failing that I would like to get some decals made up the way you did it. I have a lot of quality pictures of most of these decals and know where I can get a shot of one other wierd one vancity did.

As for lifting decals from an old frame, I have some fire department serfactant called FFG and I thought I'de try that.

Any thoughts on this? Glad to see you got those decals done.

Hi  Wayne great project glade you started it .and it is coming together .Should go  over very well I would think.             All the best Dave

To all:  thanks for your kind comments.

Lawrence:  The decals will be sold individually or as sets, not the display sheet you see here; it is just to show the individual decal transfers that will be available after next week,  When I have all of them, I will set pricing.

As to removing  water slide decals, many factors must be considered.  Were they coated with wax or paint, what is the adhesion medium, etc.  I will email you.

Cheers

Hey Wayne, first off i would like to say what a wonderful job you and of course the others have done with these. Secondly just wanted to show my support, and will be ordering a few of these and sending an email your way once you have everything finalized and sorted out ect...  Thanks to Everyone involved in this project, your going to make a lot of CCM Collectors and Enthusiasts real giddy with these!
