1941 Double Bar

I am relativley new to the bicycle restoration world (and this website) and have recently aquired this 1941 CCM Double Bar. I am curious about a couple of things. I checked the serial number and it appears to be 1941.

The rear rim is black and it is inscribed with "Dunlop 28 X 1 3/8 WO." The front rim has no markings on it and is chrome or aluminium. Would either of these be original or would the original rims have been painted with pin stripes to match the frame? There are a few remnants of pinstriping on the frame. The seat doesn't appear to be original either. Any thoughts on what it should be?

Any information would be most appreciated. I will add more images once I get a better handle on posting photos here.

Hello,

The rims should be 28 X 1 1/2 Canadian size or 28 X 1 3/4 Dunlop W.O.. Are you sure that the back rim is 28 X 1 3/8 W.O.? This is a rare size and used only on the CCM Road Racer before the 1936 model year (they were plated Endrick rims). The front rim is a newer replacement. The chain guard and seat are also newer replacements.

With the single piece crank it would appear to be a rambler motorbike.

The rim is 28 x 1 3/4. Thanks. So is this likely original to the bike?

Thanks for the information on the type of bike!

The front wheel definitely has 32 spokes, and the rear wheel appears to have 40 spokes. Bicycles that were made in England for the Canadian market came with 32/40 spoking because this was the British answerto the unequal front/rear weight distribution on the bicycle. Most of the rest of the world used 36/36 spoking, including CCM. It is not unusual to find Dunlop 28 X 1 3/4 W.O. painted rims on older bicycles in Canada. These rims are also found with chrome plating. When they are found on CCM bicycles, you know that the original rims have been replaced at some point. The Canadian 28 X 1 1/2 size was originally based on the English 28 X 1 3/4 rim size, and they both have a 622 mm rim bead diameter. The English 28 X 1 1/2 tire size has a much larger rim bead diameter at 640 mm. Your 1941 CCM Rambler would originally have had blue unmarked Westwood rims with double white pinstripes that matched the frame. The original rear hub would have been a CCM "37" and the front hub would have been a "Falcon" made by CCM.
