Early Cleveland

Hello all. Great site. I have a couple of CCM's. This is my recent fine. I believe it is between 1908 and 1912. It has a cushion frame and a skiptooth chain. The rear hub has no brake arm and the head badge reads Toronto. The serial number is 230072 and hud patient no is 106391. The fenders are wrong. I have not looked to see if the wheels are metal clad. I would like to nail down the correct year of the bike if anyone can figure it out. I will now try to post so pictures. Thanks

Nice Cleveland which also looks quit original in parts, the rear hub just says Hercules so I would say that is original . i think it would have had wood rims from new. like you say the fenders have been changed and they might also have been wood. I would say closer to 1908 or before before. Original paint might be under that blue paint.

Just my take on it.

The earliest Hercules hbs that I have do not actually have anything stamped on them. This rear hub appears to be mid to late teens. I agree that this bike is very early - before 1910.

Thank you for your info. I have not yet decided what to do with the bike as I have a number of projects ahead of it, for now it is on the back burner. I have a Question regarding the hub. I though the hub without the brake arm was discontinued in 1912. Is this correct or was it made into the teens. Thanks again for the info

The hub without the brake arm was around until the mid 1920's (1926?).

This is the heading on page 28 of the  1928 catalogue,  1927 still had no side arm.

Ive spent some time doing hub research.

The 1918 catalogue shows the Hercules hub as a friction drive without a brake arm. New Hercules hubs (not shown in the 1918 catalogue so must have come later) appear to be positve drives similar to the pat 26 and 37.

Brake arms were added in the twenties. However earlier hubs could have the brake arms added so the presence of a brake arm doesnt define the age of a hub.

Hi Brian,

Great bike! I sent you an email, I'm not sure if you received it or not. I am interested in several or all of the parts if you are thinking about or willing to part it out.

Thank you,

Jay
