Vintage Canadian bicycles

Use this forum to discuss all things related to non-CCM Canadian bicycles, including Sunshine, Werlich etc.

Sunshine

I have a Sunshine that was brought in for restoration.  The stem is facing backwards.  It was purchased used by an 8 yr old in 1958.  Would turning the stem 180 degrees be done to decrease the reach for smaller riders?  Was this common and is it safe.  Althought the owner is not eight anymore, she recalls the biccyle fitting perfectly.  I'll need to assess fit later, but wanted to know if this set-up alther the saftey or riding characteristics.

Bent Fork?

Hello,

I have this 1979 Raleigh 3 Speed I just restored.  Had it out for a test ride this morning and looked down to notice the fork crown is bent to the left. The bicycle rode fine, steered well and gave me no trouble.  It tracked straight (with no hands) as long as I shifted my weight to the far right.  I got a shimmy at about 35 km/hr. The wheel is centred and there are no other issues (e.g. braking, stem/bar alignment, etc.)

can anyone identify this bike?

Hi,

I pickup up this bike a while ago but don't know what it is. There is very little left of the decal on the head tube. The front hub is a Phillips and rear is CCM. It has Gibson pedals and a Lobdell-Emery seat. The webbing at the back of the head tube has a recessed area stamped "E1957". I assume that is a date rather than a serial number. Any ideas on what make this is?

thanks,

Paul

TOC etc. bike stands

Here are some stands I picked up from a private collection in Toronto. I've sold one Myers A frame stand & and the larger drop stand. One stand(second photo) is a 1911 patented Persons. Unsure of the smaller drop stand maker. Anyone know if these (with the exception of Persons) are Canadian made?

Kay crank. Any info?

I recently picked up this bet cool Kay drive side arm with attached ring.

wondering if anyone had any info on it and Kay bicycles. Read a bit on the Web. Toronto, TOC.

this looks pretty NOS to me.

TOC Ladies Frame Need ID

I got this on the weekend. Has anyone seen a frame like this before. Very heavy lugs, cottered crank and cottered pedals. No headbadge, no holes for it. It looks like it had a spoon brake before. The owner put his initials and 52 under the BB.

Filing cotter pins

Does anyone have any advice, jigs or wisdom to share on how to file cotter pins? I have one article from Randy at My Ten Speeds but looking for others too. I currently carefully eye-ball the process with some success. Just looking for better more precise methods. Thanks and take care, Daryl

Another Badgeless TOC Bike

This bike looks to be 1890s. The rear hub has no brake or freewheel, but looks like it originally had a spoon brake which is now missing. I'll post it on The Cabe in case it's an American bike, and I'm posting it here in case anyone recognizes it as a Canadian-made or British-made bike. It came out of a farm auction in Janetville, south of Lindsay, about 50 years ago. If you know what it is, please tell!

(Used) Spoke Question

I am wondering what folks think about re-using spokes.  When parts are scarce it often requires lacing a hub from one wheel to the rim of another.  My question is not so much about maintaining authenticity, or keeping things original or even economics, as much as it is a question about safety and the wastage of what may be perfectly good to re-use parts.

Leader Marquis ser.# ?

I have recently come across a Leader Marquis, mfg by Victoria Precicision Works in Montreal. Unfortunately, the bike was "worked on" by prev. owner so it's a frame and boxes of parts, presumably all there. Sorry no pics yet ( I haven't picked it up). It is Not banana seat/Mustang type, just a std cruiser w/ 20" wheels, chrome fenders, chromed steel rims (very heavy), frame is brown. Serial # 502074. Can anyone direct me to a serial number guide for Leader, or tell me the year, I'm guessing '74?
